Causes of Gum Disease
Periodontal disease, including early periodontal gingivitis and advanced gum disease periodontitis, is principally caused by bacterial plaque, a viscous, colorless film that continually forms on the surface of your teeth and gum lines.
Other gum disease causes include:
- Smoking
- Genetics
- Pregnancy
- Medication
- Stress
- Poor dental hygiene and abnormal oral habits (clenching and grinding teeth)
- Diabetes
- Poor nutrition
